This small medieval town, overlooking the Sacco valley from its rocky spur, is the birthplace of several popes, including Boniface VIII (1235-1303). In 1303, the French king Philip the Fair accused Boniface VIII of heresy and corruption, in an episode which became known as the “Slap (or Outrage) of Anagni” .
