The town of Aosta is situated in the centre of the Aosta valley, an autonomous region where a Franco-Provençal dialect is still spoken and where cattle farming and woodcarving are the main traditional activities. The town has retained its Roman castrum layout, as well as some of its ancient monuments. Now popular with tourists, this important medieval centre on the road leading to the Grand Saint-Bernard Pass and Switzerland was the birthplace of St Anselme, once Archbishop of Canterbury.
