Aquileia
: Michelin's recommendations
According to legend, an eagle (aquila) crossed the sky on the day that this town was founded in 181 BC. This was considered to be a lucky omen, and the new settlement was named after the bird of prey. The town became a flourishing market town and was used as a headquarters by Augustus during his struggle against the Germanic tribes. From 554 to 1751, Aquileia was one of the most important ecclesiastical patriarchates in Italy.
