Lombardy and Piedmont share the southern part of Lake Maggiore, considered the most beautiful stretch of water in the region. Learn about the famous Borromeo family whose symbol - three intertwined rings - continues to fascinate geometry buffs. The powerful citadel of Angera, nicknamed "la Rocca", affords a view of the other side of the lake and Arona, its charming neighbour, where the lagoons contain the spectacular Lagoni di Mercurago nature preserve.Customise this route and add it to My travel book
Charles Borromeo, Cardinal Archbishop of Milan, distinguished himself by his conduct during the plague which decimated the Lombard capital in 1576. In recognition of his heroism, the citizens of Arona had this 24m high statue, set on a 12m base, erected in his honour in 1679.
The citadel, which has been here since the Lombard period (8C), has a courtroom decorated with admirable 14C frescoes evoking the life of archbishop Ottone Visconti. From the Castellana tower, admire the sweeping view over lake Maggiore. The fortress is also home to a Doll and toy museum (Museo della Bambola e del Giocattolo) which charts the history of the doll from the early 19C to the present day.
