Cassino : Michelin's recommendations

This town in Lazio is famous as the site of a decisive battle in May 1944 between the Allied troops and German occupying forces, which enabled the Allies to open the road to Rome. The fighting severely damaged Monte Cassino abbey, one of the most important Christian monasteries in the world (it was here that St Benedict drew up the Benedictine rules). The abbey has since been rebuilt according to the original plans.
