Chiavenna : Michelin's recommendations
Chiavenna is situated in the heart of a region of wild valleys. As its name suggests, it occupies a ""key"" (chiave) location in the Splügen and Maloja passes between Italy and Switzerland. Apart from the strange frescoes which adorn the exterior of the Palazzo Pretorio and doorways in Via Dolzino, Chiavenna is known for its crotti. These restaurants housed in natural caves serve specialities such as pizzocheri (buckwheat pasta and melted cheese), bresaola (cured meat) and bitto, a local cheese.
