Formerly one of the most unsanitary places imaginable, The old Po Delta, which encircles Comacchio, has now been transformed into an agricultural area. The landscape is flat and desolate as far as the eye can se, dotted with isolated farms, criss-crossed with canals which the locals fish eels in and obstructed by clusters of umbrella pines. Although this place is rather dull, it is certainly not small. South of the Delta, the Valli di Comacchio, form a lagoon area of melancholic beauty.
