Como and its surroundings
Como and its surroundings
By car, 5 km, 1 dayYou will find few landscapes of such harmonious beauty. Here it attains truly sublime heights, and you will need several days to get used to it. Stendhal's words may come to mind: "The world has nothing more ravishing to offer. What need to go and seek happiness? It is here, before your very eyes!"

Como
Started in the late 14C, completed in the Renaissance and crowned with an 18C dome by Juvara, the Como Cathedral has a remarkable façade decorated with exceptional technical skill by the Rodari brothers who also decorated the North Portal, called "the frog's portal". The solemn Gothic interior is decorated in the Renaissance style : tapestries, paintings by Bernardino Luini and Gaudenzio Ferrari, and a moving Deposition, sculpted by Tommaso Rodari.
Adjacent to the façade of the Cathedral, this old communal palace built in the 13C is made up of an arcaded ground floor and an upper floor decorated with windows with three openings.
This imposing Neo-classic development was built at the end of the 18C. Its gardens offer a lovely view over Como town and the lake.
This splendid location is famous for the Villa d'Este, an opulent 16C residence now converted into a hotel: only guests are allowed into the villa and the lovely surrounding park . The way to see the villa and setting is from the lake, but alternatively the view from Piazza del Risorgimento, near the landing stage with the Art Nouveau-style roof, is also very impressive.
