In AD 79, Herculaneum was a peaceful fishing port, inhabited by craftsmen and wealthy patricians who were attracted here by the superb Bay of Naples. With the eruption of Vesuvius the town was quickly engulfed by a sea of mud causing death and devastation. The mud solidified into a hard shell, preserving the timber structures which in Pompeii were consumed by fire, thus providing an evocative and moving testimony of daily life suddenly cut short.
