With its wide avenues, empty squares and austere palaces, Ferrara seems to have come straight out of a painting by Giorgio De Chirico. Born in Ferrara, this famous painter used the town as a source of inspiration for his “metaphysical painting”. However, it was the architect Biagio Rossetti and the Este family who were responsible for the fine Renaissance district, which is often referred to as the “first modern town in Europe”.
