Gubbio is famous for the story of the wolf of Gubbio, in which a wolf repents of its sins after meeting St Francis of Assisi. The town is typical of the Middle Ages, with its fortified layout, ochre coloured houses, tiled rooftops, towers and palaces. The latter bear witness to the prosperity once enjoyed by the town, an independent Ghibelline commune that flourished in the 11C and 12C.
