All that remains of the 16C ramparts that encircled the historic centre of Lecce are the castle and a few vestiges of the city defences. A ring of avenues now delineates the centre, at the heart of which is the lively Piazza Sant’Oronzo, the small church of San Marco and the old Palazzo del Seggio. To the south side of the square the remains of a 2C Roman amphitheatre have been discovered. Other monuments worth seeking out: San Matteo (17C), the Piazza del Duomo surrounded by Baroque façades, the church of Il Rosario and the basilica of Santa Croce.
