Mantua
: Michelin's recommendations
Situated in the southeast of the Lombardy region, Mantua stands in the centre of a fertile plain once occupied by marshland. The birthplace of the poet Virgil and capital of the Gonzaga family, enlightened patrons of the arts, the city was the main artistic and intellectual centre of northern Italy in the 15C and 16C. Its rich collection of art and architecture from the Renaissance period includes works by famous artists such as Andrea Mantegna and Giulio Romano.
