Situated at the entrance to the Val Venosta in the Adige valley, Merano is an important tourist centre thanks to its mild climate and thermal waters. The town also hosts the Gran Premio Ippico, the most famous steeplechase horse race in Italy. Numerous cable-cars and chairlifts lead from the town to Merano 2000, a resort which is popular with skiers and hikers.
