Duomo : Michelin's recommendations
Let's say it from the beginning: it is a masterpiece! The "colossal lightness" of this immense cathedral, covered with gables, little bell towers, pinnacles, composing a veritable lacework of white stone that the afternoon sun shines on. There are many, many statues of white marble on the terrace (there are exactly 2 245 !) make for an unforgettable sight. In 1386, Gian Galeazzo Visconti ordered that this cathedral be built, and from them on the construction work was directed by a variety of Italian, German and French project managers, for... a few centuries, as the facade was finished in 1809, under Napoleon's direction. You must walk around the entire building in order to see the chevet with its three immense bays with tracery of curves and counter-curves, and its rose windows. And don't forget to go up to the terraces from where you will be in the perfect spot to admire the incomparable finesse of the 135 spires, dominated by the " Tiburio", a tall spire measuring 108 m that tops the golden statue of the Madonnina. An even more unique view?... is the one you will get from the 7th floor of the department store la Rinascente: from here you are so close, you can see all the architectural detail of the rooftop! The interior contrasts strongly with the exterior for its austerity and simplicity: the five naves are separated by 52 pillars reaching prodigious heights. Magnificent stained glass windows ornament naves and transepts. You can also visit the crypt and the treasure, and the silver urn that contains the remains of Saint Charles Borromeo, as well as silver and goldsmith works and ivory objects.
