Nestling between a rocky islet and the jetty linking it to the shore, the port of Santa Lucia has preserved its charm. The Castel dell'Ovo or “Egg Castle” is a severe Norman structure, remodelled by the Angevins, which takes its name from the magic egg that Virgil supposedly hid in its walls, which if destroyed, would lead to the destruction of the entire building. From the port there is a superb view of Vesuvius and, at dusk, of the illuminated buildings of Vomero and Posillipo.
