Lago d'Orta is separated from Lake Maggiore by Monte Mottarone rising to the northeast. It is bordered by wooded slopes and the tiny islet of Isola San Giuilio, home to a basilica, rises from its still waters. The best view of this delightful picture can be had from Madonna del Sasso (5km from Alzo). Take the time to stroll through the old streets of Orta san Giulio before heading for the pilgrim site of Sacro Monte (Varallo), 20km west of the lake. The site is home to 43 chapels decorated with 16C-18C terracotta figures.
