Forum : Michelin's recommendations
This vast space, the centre of the public life, is reached after having entered the excavations through the Porta Marina which was the old road to the sea. On this immense square, reserved for pedestrians, religious ceremonies were carried out, justice was administered, public affairs were debated and business went on. It is paved with great marble flagstones and decorated with statues of the Emperors. The forum was surrounded on three sides by a colonnaded portico and enclosed by the main public buildings of the city of which there are some impressive remains. There is the basilica (which did not have the slightest religious purpose: legal and business affairs were carried on there), which is the largest building in Pompeii (67m x 25m); the temple of Apollo, with copies of statues of Apollo and Diana found there ( the originals are in the museum at Naples) and, as a backcloth, Vesuvius, peaceful yet majestic; the temple of Jupiter, flanked by two triumphal arches which have lost their marble, was devoted to the "Capitoline Triad" of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva: the macellum, or great covered market ; the temple of Vespasian and the Building of Eumachia which is reached through an attractive corniced marble doorway sculpted with floral motifs. In the middle of all that, stray dogs lead a peaceful life once the humans (who now leave the place behind a guide brandishing a parasol) have abandoned the place at the end of the day and carry on their business in the fashion of the inhabitants of the yesteryear.
