The first mystery is where in fact are the wall paintings which made the reputation of this villa? They are very hard to find in this maze of rooms. The second mystery is that of the paintings themselves; on a red Pompeiian background is a splendid fresco which runs all round the room depicting various scenes on the initiation of a young bride into the mysteries of the cult of Dionysus, which was then much in vogue in southern Italy. Somewhat diabolical, it is all the same quite wonderful.
