This former trading post was founded by the Greeks and became a major commercial port under the Romans. As the town is at the centre of the volcanic area known as the Phlegrean Fields it is constantly affected by ground movements which occur in this region. Changes in sea level led to the harbour being abandoned and, more recently, the evacuation of Pozzuoli's town centre.
