Discover a suburb where the new and the old of Italy collide. Sample handmade ice cream, admire the grand Basilica of St. Bartholomew, and stand amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life in Piazza Santa Maria.
Across the Tiber River from the relics of ancient Rome lies Trastevere, an atmospheric neighborhood filled with the history of Rome combined with the rush of modern life. Set off from the banks of Tiber Island, stopping to admire the Church of San Bartholomew, before strolling over stone Cestius Bridge and into Trastevere.
Taste a delicious handmade sorbet, called "grattachecca," before heading off for a tour through the neighborhood. Admire the unique architecture and layout of the area, with trendy modern nightclubs interspersed with art galleries and apartments. Explore the labyrinth of alleys that crawl through the buildings as your guide points out the hot spots of the neighborhood.
Arrive at the Basilica of Santa Cecilia, built on the stop where the Roman martyr Cecilia died in the year 220. Local legend says her body was discovered in the Bascilica in 1600 completely intact and untouched by time. Continue on, walking along cobblestone streets to Piazza Santa Maria, the heart of the neighborhood. Grab a seat on a park bench and admire the square's wealth of 12th-century mosaics, while you soak up the atmosphere of modern life in Trastevere. Don't miss the chance to sample some of the specialties from the nearby bakery, famous as being one of the best in town. After filling up on treats, head to Piazza Trilussa, one of Trastevere's most popular spots. See the Acqua Paola fountain, which sits at the heart of the square and is a popular meeting point for locals.
After a morning of exploration, end the tour at Sixtus Bridge at Ponte Sisto, where you can easily walk back to the center of the city, or head back into Trastevere to continue exploring the suburb on your own.
