Montemartini Power Station : Michelin's recommendations
This was the first electric power station of its kind. It was inaugurated in 1912 and remained in operation until the 1950s. Inside lies an art collection from the Capitoline museums, that ended up here during renovation work. It was to be temporary. And then... And then, a strange poetic atmosphere arose from this confrontation between such totally different eras. Suddenly, the Muse Polyhymnia, and its dreamy look went further than simply cohabitating with Machine Room turbines, Praying Agrippina was getting on fine with the imposing Diesel motors, dignified Roman patricians were not disturbed by the boiler's proximity... You have to learn to lose yourself in this museum with its strange premises, grasp the beauty of this industrial architecture, these marble busts that seem to burst forth from the depths of some dream. We can therefore look at them differently (better, no doubt) than in the usual Renaissance palaces, that are just as anachronistic, and where we are used to seeing them. This is a rare and precious, intimate moment (especially as the power station is off the tourist track). It is one of those moments where you feel that something is happening, that a dialogue is being established, beyond the centuries and between civilisations.
