This monumental gate leads into Piazza del Popolo. It was incorporated into Aurelian’s Wall (3C) and heralds the city's splendour to visitors arriving from the north along the former Via Flaminia. Its exterior façade bears the Medici coat of arms in accordance with Pope Pius IV’s wishes; on the square’s side, it was richly decorated in 1655 by Bernini.
