Salerno Interesting : Michelin's recommendations

In 1077, Salerno became the capital of the Norman Robert Guiscard. This prosperous town became famous for its university and School of Medicine which was also open to women, almost unheard of at the time (11C-13C). With the arrival of the House of Anjou, the city declined, while its rival, Naples, flourished. However, Salerno played an important role in 1943, when the 5th US Army landed here and the town was the provisional headquarters of the government of Free Italy.
