San Leo
: Michelin's recommendations
A winding road leads to the top of this imposing rock (583m) on which the village and fortress, designed by Francesco di Giorgio Martini in the 15C, have been built. It was in this fortress that Joseph Basalmo, the Count of Cagliostro, an admirer of the occult sciences, who inspired Alexandre Dumas, died in 1795. The fine view from the summit takes in the Marecchia valley. The Lombard Romanesque cathedral (1173) and sacred art museum, exhibiting works from the 14C-18C, are well worth a visit.
