Santa Maria Capua Vetere : Michelin's recommendations
This is Hannibal's Capua, an opulent city of pleasure and temptation during the Roman Empire. It was later abandoned by its inhabitants who founded the present town due to attacks by Saracens. The Campanian amphitheatre, the largest in the Roman world after the Coliseum, housed the school of gladiators in which the revolt headed by Spartacus erupted in 73 BC. In the Mitreo, a rectangular underground chamber, visitors can admire a rare fresco of the Persian god Mithras.
