This fishing village is dominated by the Rocks of the Cyclops, a ragged mass of black volcanic rocks rising up from the sea. According to the Odyssey, these were the rocks hurled by Polyphemus at Ulysses, who had blinded him by thrusting a stake into his only eye. The village and its small harbour, with brightly coloured boats lying on the beach, served as a film set for La Terra Trema by Lucchino Visconti, which was based on the novel by Giovanni Verga.
