The temple had been destroyed but was rebuilt around 480 BC to celebrate Agrigento's victory over the Carthaginians at Himera. Never completed, it is nonetheless one of the biggest temples ever built in Antiquity. Its entablature was supported by 20m-high half-columns alternating with giant male caryatids or telamons, an example of which has been rebuilt on the ground in the centre of the temple, and which gives an idea of the huge size of the monument.
