A Sicilian Hike in the Region of Agrigento
A Sicilian Hike in the Region of Agrigento
By car, 173 km, 1 day''The opulence and splendour of the city are such that the inhabitants of Akragas build temples and houses as if they were immortal, and eat as if they were going to die tomorrow.'' These words from the philosopher Empedocles, a native, evoke the past splendour of Agrigento, a sumptuous story that began 2,500 years ago in Magna Graecia. Explore this mythical strip of coast in south-western Sicily, with its legendary narratives and long beaches of white sand.

Agrigento
Valley of the Temples (Valle dei Templi)
Do not search for the valley! The temples (a dozen of them) erected in 5 BC, are located on the ridge to the south of the town, . Set on fire by the Carthaginians in 406, they were restored in their original style by the Romans. Earthquakes, fanatical Christian iconoclasm and the need to retrieve stones for other buildings led to there destruction and only the temple of the Concorde is in a good state, probably due to its conversion into a church in the 6C.
Sant' Angelo Muxaro
Bivona
Caltabellotta
This is of Norman origin (the exterior of three apses is the only evidence of this) and it was given the Baroque treatment in the 17C. Inside, the three naves contain some interesting works: frescoes by the local artist Tommaso Rosi (1829) depicting the Apocalypse and scenes from the life of Mary Magdalen, an attractive marble work by Antonio Gagini (1581) showing episodes from the Passion of Christ.
Eraclea Minoa beach, a beautiful, long white sandy beach, is enclosed by the tall white cliff and a magnificent pine forest.
