Augusta : Michelin's recommendations
Augusta is a busy industrial port (oil, production of unleaded petrol) which was devastated by earthquakes in 1693 and 1990, as well as the air raids of 1943. It was founded by Frederick II to defend the bay, as the remains of a Swabian castle and the Spanish gate at the entrance to the citadel testify. In the old town, the Corso Principe Umberto is the main commercial thoroughfare.
