Caltabellotta : Michelin's recommendations
Caltabellotta occupies a superb site perched on a steep rocky spur at an altitude of 900m. Its name Kal'at al-ballut (Fortress of the Oaks) is of Arab origin and reflects the town’s imposing location. Its impregnable position made it an effective military outpost for many years; the Angevin abdication was signed here after the Sicilian Vespers revolt (1302). On the peak, the ruined Norman castle seems to blend naturally into the landscape.
