The cathedral is the town's emblem. Roger II had construction work started on it in 1131. This building surrounded by palm trees is a magnificent piece of Romanesque architecture with a style that is more in keeping with the Norman style than that of Palermo and endowed with some superb Byzantine-style mosaics.
