Cathedral (Duomo) : Michelin's recommendations
This building surrounded by palm trees is built of golden-tinted stone which blends in perfectly with the cliff of the Fortress behind. And it is Roger II who we have to thank for this cathedral, fulfilling the his wow to build this church after surviving a shipwreck on his return to Naples. The construction work lasted from 1131-1240. The façade was completed in 1204 and is a masterpiece of Romanesque art. It has central bay spanning two levels in which a false loggia decorated with groined arches surmounts intersecting arches. It is flamked by two square towers whose pointed roofs are covered with majolica. The interior has a Latin cross design. The three naves are separated by columns with Sicilian-Norman capitals. However it is the cathedral's magnificent varied and brightly coloured mosaics on a gold background that will captivate you, as will the immense Christ the Pantocrator in the apse. Furter in, you will see a depiction of the Virgin in prayer, surounded by the twelve apostles with four archangels overhead - a format that was customary in Byzantine art.
