This little town was bestowed upon the Bishop of Catania by Roger II. Its name originates from the earthenware jars in which the tithes on the harvest due to the bishop were collected. Sights of interest in the town include the imposing neo-Classical Duomo (cathedral) with its twin square towers, and the small, Liberty-style Palazzo Bonaventura and Moorish Palazzo Quattrocci, both of which stand on the main street (Via Callipoli).
