Modica Interesting : Michelin's recommendations

Modica was once a town of cave dwellings, guarded by a castle standing on a rocky spur. Forced to abandon their traditional homes after the 1693 earthquake, the locals settled further down in the valley, where two streams meet to form the River Scicli. In 1902, disaster struck again when the town was flooded. A radical solution to this problem was found – the rivers were filled in and three main roads built over them.
