Founded during the Byzantine period, Nicosia developed on the hillside around its castle, the ruins of which can still be seen on top of the rocky spur. The town’s history has been marked by frequent fighting between its lower and upper districts, which eventually led to the town being officially divided into two. The historic centre of the town is well worth a visit, with its medieval character and numerous interesting monuments.

Nothing remains of the castle built atop a rocky outcrop, apart from an ogive arch marking the entrance to the bastion. No matter, as visitors still get to enjoy a very attractive view over the roofs of the town and the surrounding hills.
