Founded during the Byzantine period, Nicosia developed on the hillside around its castle, the ruins of which can still be seen on top of the rocky spur. The town’s history has been marked by frequent fighting between its lower and upper districts, which eventually led to the town being officially divided into two. The historic centre of the town is well worth a visit, with its medieval character and numerous interesting monuments.

The small place is flanked by several palaces including the town palace from the 19 C. (glance into the courtyard at an attractive candelabra in wrought iron!) and by Saint Nicholas' cathedral.
