Prior to the terrible earthquake of 1693, the old city stood astride the line of the Alveria crest flanked by two deep gorges. The Porta Aurea provides access to the town whose once lively streets are now overgrown with vegetation. Here and there among the shrubs and bushes are ruins, evidence of its bustling past. A very poignant place.
