Palma di Montechiaro : Michelin's recommendations
The town was founded in 1637 by Carlo Tomasi, Prince of Lampedusa, and an ancestor of the writer Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa (1869-1957). The latter wrote the famous novel Il Gattopardo (The Leopard), which was published in 1958 and made into a film by Luchino Visconti.

In front of the church is a large staircase. It has an attractive Baroque facade in white limestone flanked by two graceful bulbous campaniles. The Tomasi palace or "Palace of the Holy Duke" stands beside the staircase.

A visit to Montechiaro castle is justified by its location. This austere 14C building stands proudly on a rocky outcrop which plunges down into the sea.
