The town was founded in 1637 by Carlo Tomasi, Prince of Lampedusa, and an ancestor of the writer Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa (1869-1957). The latter wrote the famous novel Il Gattopardo (The Leopard), which was published in 1958 and made into a film by Luchino Visconti.

A large staircase leads up the church, whose attractive Baroque facade is adorned in white limestone flanked by two graceful bulbous campaniles. The Tomasi palace or "Palace of the Holy Duke" stands in front of the church.

A visit to Montechiaro castle is justified by its location. This austere 14C building stands proudly on a rocky outcrop which plunges down into the sea.
