This room in the Villa Romana del Casale, the Circus Room, was the bathhouse gymnasium. The mosaic decoration reproduces the setting of a circus that has been identified as the Rome's Circus Maximus. The theme illustrated here is the quadriga race that signalled the end of the festivities held in honour of Ceres, goddess of the harvests. The guest rooms open onto the northern coast of the peristyle. These are reached via a vestibule with decoration depicting the lady of the house. Note the oven in the former kitchen.
