Ragusa was devastated by an earthquake in 1693. The subsequent reconstruction of its oldest part, Ibla, created two distinct areas of the city: Ragusa itself and Ibla, a delightful quarter combining a medieval layout of narrow blind alleys with the richly ornamental Baroque style, granted Unesco World Heritage site status in 2002. Don’t miss the Duomo di San Giorgio, Palazzo Nicastro and the church of Santa Maria dell’Itria.
