Salemi : Michelin's recommendations
The town is surrounded by vineyards, as grapes are the main crop in the Trapani region. Salemi has retained traces of Arab culture in its historic centre, although the 1968 earthquake damaged its narrow medieval streets and fortified castle. Salemi was surprisingly proclaimed the first capital of Italy after Garibaldi's arrival in the country.

Norman castle

The castle was built on the orders of Roger of Hauteville on the site of an old fortress. It has two square towers and a high round tower. Nearby are the ruins of the main church razed to the ground by the earthquake in 1968.
