The small village of San Marco is located just 9km from the sea at an altitude of 550m. The site was probably inhabited in the pre-Hellenistic period; each stage in Sicilian history subsequently left its mark here: after the Greeks, it was named Municipium Aluntinorum by the Romans, and San Marco by the Normans, who built a castle here.
