The square was once named Piazza del Cinque d'Oro, in reference to playing cards. It was a place for the performing arts: Concerts and plays used to animate this square where there once stood a platform surrounded by four small paths. Today the superb Baroque buildings gives the place its charm, namely the Cathedral, the basilica S.S. Pietro e Paolo, the palazzo Communale and finally the palais Mod• which was known as the Eldorado in its theatre days.
