Climbing up the crater of Stromboli, one of the few active volcanoes in the world, is a unique and unforgettable experience. The crater consists of a cluster of five mouths. A few hundred metres away, you can observe the regular spray of incandescent lapilli, which is accompanied by noisy explosions, a sight that will make you forget the fatigue induced by the walk up (lovely views) and the imminent journey back down. The eruptions are especially spectacular at night: go up the volcano in the late afternoon and bring a torch.
