Volcano ilsland : Michelin's recommendations
This 21 km2 island was, according to the Ancients, the home of Vulcan's forges, worked by the Cyclopses. Born out of fusion of four volcanoes, the island lies under the most imposing and most active of them, the Vulcano della Fossa, a 391 m high red stone cone. Although there has been no eruption on the island since 1890 there are still important signs of activity: fumaroles (smoke-holes), spouting steam jets from the top but also underwater. As for the hot sulphurous mud-flows they are most appreciated for their therapeutic properties. Two small ports ( Porto di Levante and Porto di Ponente) decorated with modern volcanic-rock sculptures are the throbbing heart of the island with its black beaches made up of volcanic sands (les spiagge nere), water pools where the risks of being burned are very real... Among the many possible excursions, you can visit Monster Valley ( Valle dei Mostri) named after the strange volcanic rocks dotted all over it or roll around in the mud with exquisite delight (providing you haven't any contra-indications). But the pièce de résistance is without a doubt the crater climb which will make your trip to the island an unforgettable one. The climb offers magnificent views and slowly but surely you seem to depart from the world as you know it, the smell of sulphur intensifying as the landscape becomes ever morealien. The spectacle at the top is awesome!
