The attractive small town of Sirmione stands at the tip of the peninsula that bears its name, to the south of Lake Garda. It has been a major holiday resort for many centuries – back in Roman times the Latin poet Catullus owned a sumptuous villa here. Today, Sirmione is a renowned thermal spa, in particular for treating respiratory disorders. The imposing Scaligera fortress and the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, which has retained 15C and 16C frescoes, are particularly attractive.
