The history of Vipiteno, situated only 15km from the Austrian border, began in the Bronze Age. In Roman times, it became Vipitenum, then in the Middle Ages was named Stercengum (from which Sterzing derives). Vipiteno enjoyed prosperity when silver and lead were mined in neighbouring valleys. Today, it is a small mountain town with typical northern European architecture.
