These buildings are found in a wild setting on the side of a crag and date from the 13C and 14C. The church comprises two storeys: an upper church, decorated with frescoes from the Siena School of the 14C, and a lower church with frescoes by Magister Consolus (13C). The Sacro Speco is the cave to which St Benedict retired for 3 years. The Scala Santa leads down to the chapel of the Virgin and Shepherds' Cave.
