Tarquinia
: Michelin's recommendations
Tarquinia, crowning a rocky spur facing the sea, is famous for its Etruscan necropolis. The town, in all likelihood founded in the 9C BC by the Villanovian civilisation, controlled the whole coast of Etruria in the 6C BC. After being ruled by the Romans, malaria, followed by invasions by the Lombards, forced its inhabitants to leave the old town and move to the present site.
