Tropea rises up on an arenaceous rock, surrounded by sheer cliffs that loom over the sea. The lonely Santa Maria dell’Isola church clings to a rock opposite it. Visit the Romanesque Norman cathedral, which still has its original façade, and the Diocesan Museum, which has a fine collection of icons, paintings and religious sculptures on display (13C-18C). It is worth the trip down to Capo Vaticano (12km south): towering 107m above the sea, it affords staggering views over the Tyrrhenian coast.
