Making Italians – 150 years of Italian History at the Officine Grandi Riparazioni (Video)

Georges Rouzeau - 2011-07-12

Using an array of multimedia displays, in a grandiose setting, this exhibition relates the story of Italian Unity, from the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861 to the present day.

A Masterpiece of industrial architecture in the heart of Turin, the Officine Grandi Riparazioni (OGR for short) is hosting one of the main exhibitions for the celebrations of the 150th Anniversary of Italian Unification.Fare gli Italiani (Making Italians) is an attempt to showcase the various elements that brought the Italians together as a nation. The exhibition is dominated by two intertwining factors. The first is chronological, relating the dates and events of national history, from the enthronement of Victor Emmanuel II in 1861 to the establishment of the Republic. The other is thematic, displayed in thirteen sections devoted to major events or institutions that have  forged Italy's identity, from the urban-rural split to the Mafia, the Roman Catholic Church to the great migrations and even education.

Two other (smaller) exhibitions complete the portraiture of this homo transalpinus. Stazione Futuro (The Remaking of Italy) explores Italy's next ten years, via its major innovative projects and research taking place in its universities and industry. The second, Il Futuro nelle Mani (The Future in their Hands) is devoted to the craftsmen of tomorrow.
